Our Favorite (veggie) Lunchspots in Montevideo

On Saturdays, we like to go out for lunch with our 3 year old daughter. So these are not the chic, fancy restaurants to go for a late dinner with your lover, but some nice places in Montevideo where you can have an informal lunch.
Sorry, I almost never take pictures in a restaurant, my mind is only focused on eating at that time :-).

  • Bosque Bambú
Vegetarian buffet. Recently, they changed the interior, so you enter through the shop (with eastern food items) to the restaurant. You pay by weight, just fill a plate and pay at the counter (around 250 pesos for a full plate). It's not cosy and in winter season, it can be cold. But the buffet is great, there's a huge (cold) salad bar and a huge bar with amazing vegetarian dishes. In my opinion, the brown plates which don't look so appealing, are the best!

  • Bechamel
This restaurant opened recently but we went already five times. Their menu is not that extended, and besides of the tradicional (and not so special) pasta/ravioli, they have some meatless plates that are great. Try the curry of vegetables, or the quinoa-risotto. Last time we ordered a pizza 'Bechamel' and it was one of the best we had in this town. And the staff is extremely friendly and willing to do everything to make you comfortable.

  • Namasté
Vegetarian restaurant, I like the chivitos. The plate of the day is a cheap option, but the quality depends.

  • Sabor Urbano
Oh, I wish we had a place like this in Antwerp! It's really cheap and delicious vegetarian food. We never had lunch in the restaurant itself, it's more like a snack bar. But when we order food (delivery) , it comes fast and warm. I especially like the blinis and quesedillas. Their vegetarian chivitos are ok, but I don't like that soja-milanesas. Sometimes, they use just too much olive oil, but in general: great food, I'm sure even non-vegetarians will love this type of food!

Pocitos
  • La Pasionaria
They call themselves as a 'universo creativo' (check the design shop!) and that also counts for the restaurant. It's such a great place, nicely decorated, friendly staff.. The dish of the day is always original (a pink risotto that was amazing!) but you will find also some classics like vegetable pie or lasagna. Bread is also good, and yes, the desserts! A 'moelleux au chocolat', perfectly cooked, without dulce de leche, love it! And it's so peaceful and quite here, a place where you can relax completely.
It's maybe a bit more expensive, but the quality makes it reasonable.

Lunch
Ciudad Vieja

  • Jacinto
Popular and crowded, even in winter. But we had a creative salad, the best cannelloni and a vegetable pie with a crunchy crust! It's busy but worth to wait a bit, service is extremely fast!

  • Philomène Café
When we first arrived in Montevideo, we stayed in a hotel close to Philomène. I've been there so often, I can't count it , but most of the time to drink a good tea and to work (good wifi, check my other blogpost). For lunch they serve sandwiches, wraps, salads, ... all fresh and well prepared.

Lunch
Punta Carretas
  • Hoy te quiero
We went to this place three times, with different people and only one plate was disappointing (i think some couscous-salad which was 90% couscous). They serve great vegetarian hamburgers (I tried two different ones, both were great!), served with 'papas rústicas'. Wraps are also recommended. So enough choice for vegetarians! Plate of the day is sometimes with, sometimes without meat.

Pocitos

No lunchspots, but you shouldn't miss...
  • Don Aurelio (delivery - Pocitos)
Good 'parilla' pizza! Try the pizza vegetariana or pizza 'Don Aurelio'

  • Nonna
Finally a good bakery in Pocitos! We like the ciabatta and the bread flavoured with cheese, garlic, herbs,... You can see the bakery behind the window, it's amazing how many different things (bread, pastries, cakes,...) they have, all fresh and homemade.

  • Las Delicias
Ice-cream delivery? Hell ya! I love it! (or you can go to Punta Carretas/Carrasco/Géant)
Favourite taste; chocolate Bariloche
